Rencontre Africaine Pour la Defense des Droits de l’Homme (RADDHO)
Rencontre Africaine Pour la Défense des Droits de l’Homme (RADDHO) (African Assembly for the Defense of Human Rights) was formed in 1990 to promote, protect and defend human rights in all of Africa. RADDHO works towards realising the rule of law and democratic tolerance through various projects, including conferences on human rights, field investigations and the publication of reports. It also participates in observing elections in Senegal and elsewhere in the region.
Activities Related to Refugees and IDPs
RADDHO has been a pioneer in linking the fields of human rights and refugee protection in Africa. Its work focuses on legal and social protection of refugees, in both camp and urban context. RADDHO has carried out investigative missions in refugee camps in Senegal, the Gambia and Guinea-Bissau to monitor camp conditions and the protection of refugees and human rights. In addition to producing reports on the conditions of refugees, RADDHO has been active in calling international attention to refugee issues in Africa and to advocating refugee rights such as freedom of expression, and freedom from forced repatriation.
In addition to traditional human rights advocacy in the form of radio and press communiqués, awareness campaigns, and organising conferences, RADDHO has recently become more extensively involved in protecting the economic, social and cultural rights of refugees and IDPs in Senegal through the provision of humanitarian assistance within a human rights framework. For example, RADDHO has assisted with the rebuilding of homes destroyed during the 1997 civil war in the Casamance region of Senegal which resulted in the a large number of internally displaced persons.
Since 1997, RADDHO has operated a counseling and legal services centre for refugees and IDPs. The centre provides orientation for asylum seekers upon their arrival to Senegal and provides legal guidance throughout the asylum seeking process.
Finally, RADDHO has agreed to host the WARIPNET Secretariat. The Secretariat has its own offices and is staffed by a coordinator and an assistant.
