Brunei

In 2014, Brunei’s government adopted a penal code provision that allows for stoning to death as the punishment for being in a same sex relationship. Previously, Brunei had punished those involved in same sex relationships with prison sentences.  The new provision is part of the Brunei government’s adoption of sharia law in its penal code.

Although there were no reports in 2014 of people LGBTI persons being arrested under the new penal code provisions, anecdotal evidence supports that LGBTI individuals hid their sexual orientations for fear of societal or legal retribution (http://www.state.gov/j/drl/rls/hrrpt/2014/eap/236426.htm).
