Kavita Kapur is an international human rights and immigration lawyer, focusing on asylum and refugee protection and migrants’ rights. She has previously been involved with UNHCR operations in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Malaysia, and the United States, and has volunteered in detention centers, unaccompanied minors’ shelters, and solidarity camps in Greece. In the United States, Kavita has worked for an adjudicating entity within the Department of Justice, has represented individual asylum-seekers and persons in removal proceedings, and has supported impact litigation related to migrants’ rights issues through non-governmental organizations. She has also engaged in international human rights litigation related to migrants’ rights in the Inter-American and European regional systems and in advocacy before Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council. Kavita holds a JD from the Washington College of Law, an MA in International Human Rights Law from the American University in Cairo, and a BA in Environmental Studies and Political Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She currently volunteers with a non-governmental organization promoting immigrant integration in the Basque Country, and in 2017 will be relocating to Honduras.
