Time-limited free streaming of documentary on homophobia in Uganda

And Still We Rise is a stirring story of resistance and resilience in the face of hate and lies, and an inspiring example of participatory documentary film-making in action.
This moving documentary follows Richard Lusimbo as he documents the impact of the Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA) in Uganda. The film begins by recounting the struggle to stop the AHA from being passed in Uganda’s parliament, and goes on to weave together personal accounts of widespread repression following passage of the AHA, including the impact on the filmmakers and activists themselves.
And Still We Rise takes an inside look at civil society resistance in Uganda, linking it to broader human rights and civil liberties issues including resistance led by Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) and the Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights and Constitutional Law (a coalition of over 50 civil society groups).
The film includes Nicholas Opiyo, Executive Director of Chapter Four Uganda and lead lawyer for the constitutional challenge against the AHA, examining this issue in the context of the post-9/11 assault on civil liberties under the ageing regime of Ugandan President Museveni; Dr. Sylvia Tamale of Makerere University deconstructing the myth that “homosexuality is un-African”; Dr. Frank Mugisha (SMUG), Adrian Jjuuko (Human Rights and Awareness Promotion Forum), Kasha Jacqueline (Freedom and Roam Uganda), Sam Ganafa (Spectrum Uganda) and others describing the personal and organisational impacts of the AHA.
