Statelessness

The Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion is a non-profit organisation that engages in research, education, partnership, and advocacy to promote the inclusion of stateless and disenfranchised people. The Institute conducts research into the causes and consequences of statelessness,  designs and delivers trainings on addressing statelessness, and engages in advocacy, networking, and partnership building at the national and international levels.

A new short multimedia film, titled “No One Will Notice”, documents the devastating effects detention can have on stateless persons throughout Europe. The film is made by Greg Constantine in collaboration with the European Network on Statelessness and the International Detention Coalition.

An investigative report by Reuters highlighted the plight of Syrian refugee children, many of whom have been left stateless because of the circumstances of their birth or flight. The report calls attention to the administrative, legal, and protection barriers parents face in obtaining documentation and birth certificates for their children. Births must be registered before a child’s first birthday, but restrictions on freedom of movement for Syrians in Lebanon can make it difficult to travel to the relevant offices to carry out the registration. Confusion over the rules and where to register, as well as high fees, pose other obstacles.
