The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has experienced multiple local, national and regional-level conflicts, fuelled by regional dynamics, poor governance and localised tensions over land, identity and resources. The country’s Kivu provinces in the east continue to be plagued by armed militia groups, while at a national level, a leadership crisis, most recently as a result of stalled elections, has the potential to destabilise the country as a whole. Tens of thousands of Congolese continue to live in exile outside of the country or are internally displaced.
